“Building a Better World” is the theme of this year’s Grundy County-Jewett Norris summer reading program, which kicks off this Saturday.
Children ages 0 to those entering 12th grade can sign up for the program at the library from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nachos, cookies and water will be served by the Trenton Key Club during the sign-up, which also includes distribution of activity sheets for the “Tiny Tykes,” which can be completed and turned in that day and a prize will be received.
There will be weekly sessions for each age group from June 7 to July 27. Wednesday mornings will include the Tiny Tykes at 9:30 a.m., pre-kindergarten at 10 a.m. and kindergarten through second grade at 11 a.m. On Thursdays, programs will be held for third through sixth grade students at 10 a.m. and for seventh through 12 grade students at 11 a.m. Students age 3 and older will receive a coin for every hour that they read during the summer, with the coins used to purchase prizes at the library store, including art kits, boom boxes and tables.
Special events during the summer include a talk about soccer for youth ages kindergarten through second grade on June 7; speakers from Barnes Greenhouses and the St. Joseph Public Library on July 6; and a swim party on July 28 for participants who collected at least 10 coins during the reading program.
