The individual portion of the season came to a close for the Trenton High School boys’ tennis team as its district qualifiers were defeated on Tuesday in sectional action in Excelsior Springs. The doubles team of Nick Shields and Jacob Davis fell as did singles qualifier Gabe Swann.
“I want to say congratulations to my players for getting this far into the postseason,” Trenton Coach Dave Sager said. “I know it wasn’t the finish they wanted, but I’m still proud of what they have accomplished.”
For the Bulldog contingent, LeBlond proved to be a roadblock. The Golden Eagles doubles team of Gian Lombardino and Caleb Lombardino was responsible for dumping Shields and Davis, defeating Trenton’s top doubles team 6-4, 6-3.
“Nick and Jacob started out their match with an early lead, but soon they had a hard time not creating errors which dug them into a hole,” Sager said. “They started to make a little comeback in the second set, but again caught the error bug.”
Swann meanwhile, lost his sectional match-up to a Golden Eagle as well as LeBlond’s John Lierz picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win.
“Gabe held his own against a player that has made his way to the state tournament in the past,” Sager said. “This was a great experience for Gabe and I know he’ll use it to make himself a better player in the years to come.”
Despite the individual portion of the season closing on Trenton, the Bulldogs still have more tennis to play. The Class 1, District 15 champions will host the team sectional round of the state tournament on Thursday at the THS tennis courts. Trenton will have its hands full again, taking on the District 16 champions – LeBlond. That sectionals semifinal dual will begin at 9 a.m. District 14 champion Pembroke Hill and District 13 champion Marshall will battle in a semifinal following the Trenton-LeBlond semifinal. The two semifinal winners will battle for the sectional championship and a trip to the state championships one hour after the completion of the second semifinal.
