Lathan Croy and Nate Swann each carded scores in the 80’s, putting them on the outside looking in at medal contention. Croy paced Trenton at the tournament, shooting an opening round 82, good for 22nd overall. The top 15 at the state tournament receive medals. Croy’s score was just three strokes behind the 15th-best score turned in on day one.
Swann, meanwhile, wasn’t too much farther back, comeing around the 18-hole layout with a score of 84. That placed him in a tie for 29th overall, five strokes out of the final medal spot. Swann was an all-state golfer last year, earning a 14th-place finish with a two-day total of 157.
Also in action for Trenton was Corbyn Guile. Guile finished day one with a score of 97, placing him 71st individually in the field after the opening round.
“We didn’t play particularly well,” Trenton Coach Travis Mullenix said. “We were kind of all over the place at times. It was just one of those days where we didn’t have our A game. The greens were pretty tough to get a ball to check on and we struggled with that a bit. I’d say we probably hit the driver a few times too many on a course that doesn’t necessarily require a driver off the tee that often, too.
“Hopefully (Tuesday) we can go out and have some fun, play a little better and see what happens.”
LeBlond’s Brooks Jungbluth leads the tournament after day one, carding a 67 – two under par. His total was tied for the lowest score at the state tournament in the past seven years. He birdied seven holes in his first 18.
In the team standings, however, LeBlond, which also got a first-round 69 from Hank Lierz, sits in third place with a team score of 323. Palmyra leads the field with an opening round mark of 309 and Hermann is second with a 311. Blair Oaks (333) and Maryville (343) round out the top five at the state tournament.
All three Trenton golfers teed off this morning as round two began at Fremont Hills. See tomorrow’s Republican-Times for complete results from the season-ending tournament.
Gallatin Leads Class 1
At the Class 1 MSHSAA Golf Championships, Gallatin leads the field after day one in its attempt to claim back-to-back championships at the lower level.
The Black and Red Bulldogs built a formidable lead on day one of their championships – being played at Silo Ridge Golf and Country Club in Bolivar. Gallatin carded an opening day team score of 330, leading runner-up Lincoln (340) by 10 strokes. Marceline, another school Trenton has battled this season, sits in third after a first-day team score of 341.
