THS Tennis Team In Benton Tournament

May 8, 2017 | Baseball, Sports & Recreation

For the Trenton High School boys tennis team, Friday’s Benton Tournament offered one final opportunity to tune up for the upcoming district tournament. Trenton would go 1-2 on the day at that event, finishing fourth overall as a team.
Trenton opened the tournament with a 4-1 win over host St. Joseph Benton. The Bulldogs lost the number-one singles match as Wyatt Neal fell 10-2, but Trenton would go on to win the next four in a row to punch its ticket to the winner’s bracket. Gabe Swann was victorious at number-two singles, winning 10-0 and Trenton went three-for-three in doubles matches. Nick Shields and Jacob Davis won 10-2, Kade Ockenfels and Creed Houghton won 10-1 and Weston Otto and Jeremy Elliott won 10-6.
Trenton would stumble in the semifinals, where the Bulldogs ran into a tough St. Joseph LeBlond squad. Ockenfels and Houghton scored a 10-7 doubles win but that would be the only win Trenton earned in the dual. Neal and Swann fell 10-2 and 10-8 respectively in singles matches while Shields and Davis fell 11-10 after a 7-3 tiebreaker and Otto and Elliott lost 10-3.
The loss dropped Trenton to the third-place dual, where the Bulldogs were defeated 3-2 by Savannah. Neal fell 10-0 and Swann lost 10-7 as the Savages got a leg up in singles action. Trenton would get a 10-5 win from Shields and Davis and a 10-4 win from Ockenfels and Houghton, but Otto and Elliott were defeated 10-2 as Savannah held on for the third-place title.
Individually, Ockenfels and Houghton won first-place in the number-two doubles division after their undefeated day. Davis and Shields, who were 2-1 overall, earned third-place honors in the number-one doubles division.
The tournament wrapped up regular-season play for the Bulldogs, who will now play host to either Cameron or Chillicothe in the Class 1, District 16 semifinals on Tuesday. Trenton is seeded second in the tournament, Chillicothe and Cameron meet today in a match-up of the third and sixth seeds – Chillicothe being the number three. Action at the THS tennis courts on Tuesday is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
