Gallatin was able to do that, but the Black and Gold Bulldogs took their best shot at the upset, coming up just 11 strokes short. Gallatin won the conference tournament on Wednesday at the Green Hills Golf Course in Chillicothe with a team score of 312, Trenton was second with a mark of 323 – its lowest total of the season.
“There isn’t much you can do when you play some of your best golf and still fall a little short,” Trenton Coach Travis Mullenix said. “We knew Gallatin was going to be hard to beat and I think they knew we had the potential to give them a run. Hats off to them. Second place doesn’t sting as much when you know you played well but it just wasn’t enough. I’m extremely proud of the boys.”
Trenton was paced by Lathan Croy, who carded a 75, good for third place overall individually. Nate Swann followed with a 77, ranking him fourth overall. Corbyn Guile also found himself in the top 10, shooting an even 80 for a sixth-place finish individually.
“Having three guys in the top six is a good day,” Mullenix said. “Corbyn, Lathan and Nate have all medaled in three of our last four tournaments. That shows some good consistency and, hopefully, will continue Monday at districts.”
Rounding out the team score was Luke Lewis, who checked in with a score of 91. Connor Cotton was also in action for the Bulldogs, shooting a 102.
“Luke shot the best score of his career as did Corbyn,” Mullenix said. “Connor broke 50 on nine holes for the first time ever. It was our lowest team score of the year and I was very proud of our effort.”
Gallatin’s Jett Simmons won the individual title with a score of 72 and Stanberry’s Mitchell Carroll was runner-up with a mark of 74.
Stanberry, as a team placed third, with a score of 342.
Trenton’s golf team will now turn its attention to the postseason, traveling to the Class 2, District 8 Tournament at Mozingo Lake Golf Course in Maryville on Monday.
