Middle School Teams Win Team Titles

Apr 26, 2017 | Sports & Recreation, Track

The Trenton Middle School track and field teams swept the team titles at the St. Joseph Christian Invitational on Monday. Trenton’s girls squad collected 100 points, fending off North Platte’s total of 97 for the team championship. The boys also escaped, winning the title by three points. The Bulldogs posted 93 points on the boys side to best the host school – St. Joseph Christian – and its total of 90 points.
Trenton’s girls captured four gold medals, two in relays and two individually. Maci Moore won the shot put with a throw of 35-0 and Emma Curtis was first in the long jump with a leap of 14-10. In the relay events, the 4×100-meter relay team of Curtis, Evy McCullough, Moore and Lexi Gott won with a time of 57.17 and the 4×200-meter relay team of Gott, Curtis, McCullough and Gwyneth Foster was first with a time of 1:59.41.
Trenton’s 4×400-meter relay team just missed a sweep of the relay events for the Bulldogs, finishing second. The team of Gott, Gracyn Rongey, McCullough and Curtis crossed the line runner up with a time of 4:46.66 in the final event of the meet.
“Our relay teams competed very well,” Trenton Coach Jon Guthrie said. “Their hand-offs made the difference in the 4×100 and the 4×200 meter relays, which the girls have been really working hard on.”
Other top three finishers for the Trenton girls included Moore, second in the triple jump; Foster, second in the 200-meter dash; Haylee Coplen, second in the pole vault; and Gott, third in the high jump.
“The girls really competed hard at St. Joseph Christian,” Coach Jon Guthrie said. “Overall, it wasn’t our best performance in the field or in individual events. A lot of girls, though, stepped up to get third through eighth place, which makes a big difference at a competitive track meet.
“I’m very proud of the girls’ effort this evening.”
For the Trenton boys, Chase Otto led the way, winning the 800-meter run with a time of 2:27.02 and the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:29.15.
Otto was also part of the 4×400-meter relay team, which won gold with a time of 4:09.72. He teamed with Gavin Roeder, Austin Bouzek and Camdyn Leeper to win that event.
Trenton also got gold medals from Bouzek, who won the pole vault with a mark of 8-0 and Quincy Griffin, who was first in the triple jump with a mark of 32-7. Griffin also placed second in the 200-meter dash.
Other top-three finishers for the Trenton boys included Leeper, who was second in both the 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter dash, and the 4×100-meter relay team of Griffin, Tyler Siemer, Payden McCullough and Roeder, which was second.
“ It was great to get back on track by winning a meet,” Trenton Coach Brandon Boswell said. “Our boys continue to work hard and compete at a high level. They really are a great group of kids.”
Trenton will close out its middle school track and field season on Thursday, May 4, hosting the Grand River Conference Track Meet at C.F. Russell Stadium in Trenton.
