The runs came early and the runs came often.
On Monday night in Savannah, Trenton found itself in a slugfest with North Andrew. It took 19 runs, but in the end, Trenton had a victory.
The Bulldogs plated five runs in the eighth inning, after blowing a two-run lead in the bottom of the seventh, and held on for a wild 19-14 victory over the host Cardinals.
It was evident early on this one was going to test the limits of the scoreboard. Trenton plated a run in the top of the first and North Andrew answered with two in the bottom of the frame. Trenton scored five in the second and North Andrew answered with five of their own.
“I think it was the second or third inning and I told the boys ‘hey, if we have to score 20 tonight, we have to score 20,” Trenton Head Coach Andy Hight said. “I am proud of our kids for continuing to battle and score runs.”
On what was already a rough pitching night, Trenton’s defense didn’t help much. The Bulldogs committed seven errors behind their pitchers. After North Andrew pushed three more runs across the plate in the third inning, pushing the lead to 10-6 at the time, Trenton then began to settle in. North Andrew scored just four more times in the final five frames, but the Cardinals’ two runs in the bottom of the seventh were big, tying the game and forcing extra innings in a game that would need over three hours to complete.
In what would be the only extra frame needed, however, Trenton’s offense continued to dominate, scoring five more runs. That lead would be insurmountable as Trenton finally put away the Cardinals.
“In this game, you just never know how things are going to go,” Hight said. “I would have never guessed that this game would go like that. You always have to be prepared, but you never know for sure how the game is going to work out.”
Spencer Harris and Colton Colston were each big for the Bulldogs. Both had three hits, three runs and three RBIs. Harris stole two bases and Colston swiped one. Jesse Farmer was two-for-four with a pair of RBIs and Drew Rorebeck went two-for-five with three runs scored. Trenton also got a solo home run from Avery Cooksey, who added to his one hit with another RBI and four runs scored. Hunter Dugan and Jaren Whitney each scored twice in the win.
Avery Cooksey wound up as the winning pitcher. He blew the save in the bottom of the seventh, allowing the two runs that tied the game, though neither run was earned. He shut out North Andrew in the eighth, however, protecting the five-run lead with no issues.
With the win, Trenton evened its record of the season at 8-8 overall.
