For the second day in a row the Bulldogs played a dual on a familiar surface – the THS tennis courts. For the second day in a row, Trenton rolled up an easy victory over the visitors. Monday it was Chariton, IA. Tuesday, it was Savannah.
Trenton blasted the Savages 8-2, taking all but one of the singles matches and all but one doubles match as well.
In singles play, Nick Shields reeled off an 8-1 win at number one and Jacob Davis and Kade Ockenfels followed with 8-5 and 8-3 wins respectively. Wyatt Neal would fall at number four, losing 9-8 after a 7-5 loss in the tiebreaker. Trenton bounced back, however, clinching the dual with 8-2 wins from both Creed Houghton and Gabe Swann.
In doubles play, Shields and Davis combined for an 8-6 win and Ockenfels and Houghton added an 8-5 win. Neal and Swann were defeated 8-6 in the final match, but the end result was unchanged as the Bulldogs moved to 2-1 on the season.
“We came away with a very good win for our program,” Trenton Coach Dave Sager said. “I’m very proud of how my boys competed against an opponent that never gives up on any point, game or match.
“Our strongest showing today was in the singles matches, where our consistency is getting better with every point played. My top six are playing very solid at this time and that makes me really excited about the future of the season.”
JUNIOR VARSITY
In junior varsity action, Trenton went 2-5. Weston Otto fell 6-4 in the lone singles match contested. Otto would combine with Jeremy Elliott, however, winning two doubles contests, the first 7-6 and the second 5-0. Colten Hamilton and Elijah Oyler were defeated twice, 6-1 and 5-4, and Reece Miller and Riley Raymo were defeated twice as well, 7-6 and 5-3.
UP NEXT
Trenton’s tennis team returns to action on Thursday as they begin play in the Kirksville Tournament, a two-day event that wraps up on Friday.
