Tennis Team Dealt 7-2 Loss In Opener By LeBlond

Mar 31, 2017 | Sports & Recreation, Tennis

The Trenton High School tennis team opened the season on the road Thursday, suffering a 7-2 loss at the hands of the LeBlond Golden Eagles. Trenton was able to take two of the top three singles matches, but that would be all the Bulldogs got as LeBlond took the dual, 7-2.
In singles’ play, Nick Shields suffered an 8-2 loss at number one, but Trenton took the number-two match with an 8-4 win from Jacob Davis and the number-three match with an 8-1 win from Kade Ockenfels.
LeBlond would take over from that point, sweeping the remaining three singles’ matches. Wyatt Neal lost 8-2 at number four, Gabe Swann fell 8-4 at number five and Creed Houghton lost 8-4 at number six.
Doubles’ play was all LeBlond. Shields and Davis gave it a good run, but came up short in an 8-6 loss. Ockenfels and Houghton fell 8-4 and Neal and Swann fell in another close match, 8-6.
“I’m very pleased with the effort and competitive nature my boys showed against LeBlond,” Trenton Coach David Sager said. “Being our first dual of the year, we expected to make unforced errors and it was bound to happen against a good tennis program like LeBlond. But, I also saw many good things out of my players that really pushed LeBlond into playing long points and having to work extremely hard to win those points off of us.
“We are going to build off the mistakes and successes that occurred in this dual and get ready for our next opponent in Benton on this coming Monday.”
Trenton, now 0-1 on the season, will be at home for Monday’s match-up with Benton. First serves at the THS tennis courts will occur at 4 p.m.
