The Community Garden was the topic of a program presented during Thursday’s meeting of the Trenton Rotary Club. Dr. Kevin Harris was the program chairman.
Ashlen Busick who along with her husband, Tyler, manages the garden, which is located just behind the Community Food Pantry and next to the First Christian Church. Mrs. Busick said she has been interested in the community garden concept ever since visiting one in Denver, CO while in college and when she and her husband came to Trenton three years ago, they were asked if they would be interested in managing the garden here.
The goal of the garden is “Uniting the Community in Growing Something Good.” She said the garden, while providing healthy food, gives those involved a chance to hone their skills as well as learn about the earth. Volunteers work the garden from the time the ground is worked up until the time the bounty is harvested. Vegetables are mostly grown there, along with strawberries and some flowers. She said the garden also has a fruit tree component, although an individual who has a knowledge of nursery growth is being sought to assist with that effort. There is currently an agriculture class that is starting many of the crops from seeds, with potatoes to be planted in the next few weeks.
Volunteers are always welcome to help with the garden, Mrs. Busick said, with community planting days scheduled so that persons may work during either the morning or evening hours. Those who help with the garden in any way or who make a donation are allowed to receive food from the garden. The gardening season usually runs from mid-April to August.
During the business page, a sign-up sheet was distributed for members who are to bring desserts for the Trenton’s Got Talent fundraiser on Friday, March 24 at Trenton High School. There is still time for persons five years to college age to sign up to participate in the event, which begins at 7 p.m. in the THS gym. Admission will be $5 to attend and includes a dessert and drink during intermission. Funds from the event have been designated to help purchase equipment for the proposed inclusive playground.
The club is also seeking one more family to serve as hosts for the GSE Team from Argentina/Paraguay, who will be in Trenton on April 26-27. An evening get-together is being planned while they are here.
Next week’s program chairman is Savannah Summers, with Trenton City Administrator/Utility Director Ron Urton presenting information on the 17th Street Bridge sales tax proposal.
