Gilman City Girls 63, Grundy R-5 Girls 62
The Gilman City girls rallied back to defeat Grundy R-5 on Thursday night at the HDC Conference Tournament third-place game in Winston. Grundy would take a 29-18 lead into the locker room at halftime, but Gilman City raced back behind a big night from North Central Missouri College signee Hailey Burrows.
With four seconds to go, Burrows hit a three-pointer from near mid-court, tying the game at 53-53. In the overtime period, Gilman outscored the Panthers by a single point to claim the third-place trophy.
Burrows led all scorers in the game, going for 41 points, 15 of which came from the free throw line. She also added 12 rebounds, five assists, six steals and three blocks for the Hawks (9-14). Megan Cottrell added eight points and two assists.
“I thought our girls played some great defense and we had a huge night from Hailey Burrows,” Gilman City Coach Adam Clark said. “She played a spectacular game and we also got some big time plays from Brooklyn McCrary and Kaylee Curtis.”
Grundy (13-10) was paced by Morgan Axtell, who had 21 points, 10 rebounds and three assists. Matana Munday added 13 points, 15 rebounds, two assists and three steals and Jandie Peterson finished with nine points, six assists and five steals.
Gilman City Boys 77, Grundy R-5 Boys 45
The Gilman City boys picked up the consolation trophy at the HDC Conference Tournament on Thursday night in Winston, using a 24-4 run in the opening quarter to set the tone against Grundy R-5. The Hawks tacked 10 points onto the advantage in the second quarter and then coasted through the second half, en route to the consolation title.
“The boys put together a great game,” Clark said. “They played good defense and unselfish offense.”
Skylar Reynolds led the Hawks (8-15) with 25 points and eight rebounds. Kaleb Bjornlie had 20 points, 16 rebounds, four assists and three steals and Cornelius Peery added 12 points, six steals and three assists. Mitchell Sievering finished with seven points and six assists.
Bryson Gann led Grundy (5-17) with 19 points and six rebounds and Wayne Baxter had 19 points as well.
Gilman’s teams will travel to Mercer on Tuesday, while Grundy R-5 will be at home in Galt that night, hosting Tri-County.
