Trenton Wrestlers Go 2-1 On The Road In Stanberry

Jan 27, 2017 | Sports & Recreation, Wrestling

The Trenton High School wrestling team went on the road to Stanberry on Thursday night and defeated all challengers except the hosts. Trenton fell to Stanberry 37-28, but bounced back with wins over North Andrew 44-12 and Rock Port 48-24.
vs. Stanberry
Trenton opened the night with Stanberry. Trenton was open at the three lightest weights and Stanberry was able to pick up forfeit wins at 113 and 120 to put Trenton in an early 12-0 hole.
Daniel Rodriguez got Trenton on the board with a 15-6 major decision victory at 126, but Stanberry answered when Zane Rottman lost by an 11-0 major decision at 132. Eric Lovett (138) won by forfeit at 138, but Noah Lewis lost by a 9-4 decision at 145 and Nick Wattenbarger was pinned at 152. Stanberry held a 25-10 lead in the dual at that point.
Drew Rorebeck picked up six points for Trenton with a win by fall at 160, but Mark Trump was pinned at 182 after both schools were open at 170. Jadan Whitney (195) and Mason Owen (220) both won – Whitney by fall and Owen by forfeit – and Jarvis Collins was pinned at 285 to give the dual its final score of 37-28 in Stanberry’s favor.
“Stanberry got the better of us in the first dual,” Trenton Head Coach Charlie Bacon said. “We had a couple of kids out of the lineup tonight due to injuries and illness. Brenden Johnson at 120 and Cole Little at heavyweight did not dress out. We had some good matches throughout the night, though. Daniel Rodriguez had a good performance against Stanberry, picking up the major decision, and Drew Rorebeck and Jadan Whitney both got pins against their Stanberry opponents.”
vs. North Andrew
North Andrew managed just 12 points against Trenton as Rodriguez (126) and Lewis (145) were both pinned.
Trenton got six wins by forfeit and the Bulldogs’ open weights all lined up with holes in North Andrew’s lineup as well. On the mat, Lovett scored a 13-2 major decision win for Trenton at 138 and Owen defeated his opponent at 220 by a 14-3 major decision.
“Mason Owen picked up a good win over North Andrew,” Bacon said. “It was a decent night for us, but we’ve got plenty of room for improvement.”
vs. Rock Port
Trenton won eight matches against Rock Port by forfeit, enough to guarantee the Bulldogs would win the dual, but Trenton didn’t fare as well on the mat. Most of Trenton’s top wrestlers didn’t have an opponent against the Blue Jays, however.
Lewis (145) and Trump (182) were the only Bulldogs to wrestle on the mat and both were pinned. Rock Port also got wins by forfeit at 170 and 106.
With the 2-1 showing at the quad, Trenton improved to 8-11 overall in duals this season.
The Bulldogs will return to the mat on Saturday as they host the Grand River Conference Wrestling Tournament in Trenton. Action at the event is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.
