It was far from easy, but the North Central Missouri College women’s basketball team stole a Region 16 win on the road in Nevada on Wednesday night, defeating Cottey College 61-58.
The game was close throughout the night. After a back-and-forth first half, North Central headed to the locker room trailing by a mere two points, 26-24. Both squads continued to be strong on the defensive end of the floor, but the offenses did open up a little in the third and fourth quarters. In the end, however, North Central was able to outscore Cottey 37-32 in the second half, clipping the Comets by three points in the end.
On a night where points were tough to come by, North Central’s Kendey Eaton was able to pour in 21 points, pacing the Pirates in the victory. Sarah Lamp followed with 17 points and McKinley Hurley was in double figures as well, scoring 11 points.
With the win, the North Central women remained undefeated since the calendar flipped to January. The Pirates have won six straight games and are now 14-5 overall and 2-0 in Region 16 play.
Saturday marks the next test for North Central. The Pirates play host to Penn Valley in a Region 16 women’s-men’s doubleheader at the Ketcham Community Center in Trenton. Action tips off at 1 p.m. with the women’s contest and the men’s match-up will follow at 3 o’clock.
