By the time it was over, it wasn’t close. Trenton had a 63-24 conference victory, Harris had a 29-point night.
“Spencer’s shooting definitely set things up,” Trenton Head Coach Jeremy Austin said. “What happened was he hit a tough shot and then the focus of the offense for the rest of the kids out there became getting him the ball. He did his job, which is rebound and make shots and I saw our other guys do their job by drawing defense and getting Spencer the ball.”
The game was close in the early going, with Maysville and Trenton trading blows. Harris’ first points came midway through the first quarter, though, and Maysville found it tough to keep pace. Trenton led 15-10 after a quarter of play and proceeded to outscore the Wolverines 20-3 in the second quarter and 19-5 in the third quarter turning a once close contest into a rout. Trenton was on cruise control in the fourth quarter, coasting to the finish and taking the game by 39 points.
Harris tallied eight rebounds and two steals in addition to his 29 points. Connor Cotton added 10 points, four assists and two steals and Corbyn Guile finished with nine points, four assists and two steals. Kade Ockenfels had four points, Dylan Harris had three points and five assists and Carson Radcliff, Cole Schilling, Lathan Croy and Alex Parrack all had two points each.
With the win, Trenton moved to 7-4 overall on the season and, more importantly, 3-0 within the Grand River Conference.
“The tough teams are all throughout here in the conference,” Austin said. “We know the ones that have been winning the most are still in front of us, though. It’s a tough road here, but we have a lot of ways we can be successful. We just need to buckle down and focus on what needs to be done. Conference games are a huge priority for us, but right now we have to get through a pretty tough week over in Lawson.”
The Bulldogs open play in the Lawson Tournament on Tuesday, facing Carrollton at 6 p.m. Trenton is seeded third in the tournament, Carrollton is sixth.
Junior Varsity
Two quarters of junior varsity boys’ basketball were played prior to the varsity doubleheader on Friday night. The Bulldogs made the most of the two quarters, winning the shortened-contest 24-13 and extending their record to 6-0 on the season.
Trenton came out firing in the first quarter, running a frenzied, full-court press that forced seven Maysville turnovers. The Bulldogs took the first quarter 17-9. The second quarter slowed for both teams, but the Bulldogs kept the game in hand, eventually winning 24-13.
Trenton had a very balanced scoring attack led by Carson Radcliff who had nine points. Isaac Harris scored five points, Cole Schilling and Carson Burchett each had four and Dalton Burchett rounded out the scoring with two points.
The JV will be back in action on Thursday, in a home doubleheader against Hamilton. Action tips off with a junior varsity girls contest between the two schools at 6 p.m. and the boys will follow.
