The Princeton High School basketball teams drew a split in their final games of North Central Missouri College’s High School Holiday Hoops on Tuesday. Princeton matched up with Norborne, winning a boys contest 71-45 before falling 51-36 in a girls game.
Princeton Boys
The Princeton boys took the floor first and edged ahead of Norborne in the first quarter, going up 15-12. The Tigers were able to run away from that point, going on a 36-19 run over the middle two frames. In the fourth, Princeton once again outscored its opponents, going on to take the game by 26 points.
Leading the charge for the Tigers was Andrew Smith, who scored a team-high 20 points – 13 of which came in the third quarter alone. Behind Smith, Princeton got 16 points from Calvin Berwanger – who scored all of his points in the first half – and 15 from Cody Kelly. Preston Thomas and Blaine Millburn each scored six points for the Tigers while Norborne was paced by 28 points from Evan Glaze.
With the win, Princeton improved to 3-6 overall on the season.
Princeton Girls
The Princeton girls sputtered offensively in the first half of their match-up with Norborne, netting just eight points over the game’s first 16 minutes.
The second half was a different story as the Tigers battled back, but the damage done in the first half was too much to overcome. Despite outscoring Norborne 28-19 in the second half, Princeton fell by 15 points.
Jaelyn Thomas and Payton Goodin had 10 points each to pace Princeton.
The loss dropped the Princeton girls to 4-6 overall on the season.
Both Princeton teams will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 6, playing host to South Harrison. The Grand River Conference doubleheader is scheduled to tip off with the girls game at 6 p.m.
