As if offering 73 basketball games wasn’t enough, officials of High School Holiday Hoops have announced several special events taking place during the 12-day run of the sporting event, which begins on Friday night.
Featured halftime entertainment will be presented several times during the 12th annual event, including performances by the Carrollton Spirit Dancers, the Milan Topcats Dance Troupe, the Gallatin Cheer Squad and the Trenton Flag Corps. In addition, pep bands from Green City and South Harrison will be in attendance with others expected to be confirmed this week.
Additionally,“The Star Spangled Banner” will be performed by Salem Croy and Maci Henson of Trenton and Melissa Ray of Chillicothe. Others are expected to be confirmed with vocal performances as well.
On Dec. 28, members of the Trenton Heroes will share the court with members of the Holiday Hoops Committee and friends in an abbreviated scrimmage led by Coaches Jon and Amy Guthrie.
Special days will also be shared during this year’s Holiday Hoops as area businesses and organizations are hosting sponsored days and manning both the front desk at the Ketcham Community Center as well as offering door prizes and lots of giveaways. On Dec. 19, Farmers Bank of Northern Missouri will take over the operations and North Central Missouri College employees will be in charge on Dec. 20. Dec. 23 has been designated as Century 21 Day and Barnes Baker Day has been announced for Dec. 28. The Trenton Rotary Club will observe Rotary Day on Dec. 29 and Military Appreciation Day will be recognized on Dec. 30, with all veterans admitted free throughout the day. Also on Dec. 30, Smithfield Foods will share the day and award holiday hams during the day to lucky winners.
American Family Insurance will once again sponsor “Shoot Sixty Seconds for Your School” with halftime competitions among selected representatives of the participating schools aiming to score the most free throws in 60 seconds. The individual scoring the most points will be awarded $500 to their respective high school athletic department and additional prizes will be awarded to the schools finishing as runners-up.
Hoops Director Steve Maxey says each of these special activities enhances the event and simply adds to the excitement of the annual event.
“We hope to see more of this kind of community pride displayed in the years to come as a great way for businesses and organizations to salute the young men and women who are competing on the court as well as a great way for groups to give back to the community,” he said.
