In a rematch of the second-highest scoring high school football game in Missouri history, Princeton kept its season alive, upsetting Polo with a 51-32 win on the road in Class 1, District 8 football action on Friday night.
Tigers’ quarterback Andrew Smith threw for 176 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 218 yards and three more scores. Calvin Berwanger added 126 yards rushing and a touchdown for Princeton.
The game came seven days after Polo beat Princeton 80-73 in a game that saw at least five state records broken.
“After playing Polo the previous week and the way the game turned out, our kids were fired up and prepared to play well again on Friday night,” Princeton Head Coach Thomas Hotmer said. “They were determined and ready to change the story. We knew they were a very physical team and we needed to match that. With a few defensive adjustments our kids knew we could match their physicality and were ready for a grind. Despite being the six seed, our kids are starting to play well at the right time and are excited for the opportunities to continue to compete and finish strong this season. Polo was a huge confidence boost for our kids to get over the hump and beat a very high-quality team with the style of play they exhibit. We understand each week will continue to be harder and harder but we are looking forward to becoming a better football team and competing with confidence.”
Princeton will now travel to face GRC rival Maysville in the district semifinals this Friday at 7 p.m.
