Opening ceremonies for the 2016 Missouri Day Festival are scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 13 at the First Baptist Church.
Ceremonies get under way at 7 p.m. and will include recognition of this year’s parade marshal, Charles Davidson, as well as winners of the coloring/drawing, yard decorating, window decorating and scarecrow decorating contests. Buddy Hannaford, retired Trenton R-9 Band Director, will be the guest speaker. Trenton Area Chamber of Commerce President Debbie Carman will give the welcome.
Members of the Boy Scouts will present the colors, Elizabeth Gibson will sing “The Star Spangled Banner” and Pastor Joshua Gottman will give the invocation.
The evening will end with a concert by the Trenton R-9 Vocal Music Department, under the direction of Tyler Busick. Music will include “Down in Missouri” by Greg Gilpin, “Esto les Digo” by Kinley Lange, “Home” by Phillip Phillips and “Lead Me Home” by Eric Barnum.
The program is open to the public and will be preceded by a soup supper, sponsored by the Trenton Ministerial Alliance. The soup supper will be in the basement of the church from 5 to 7 p.m.
Festival activities get under way on Friday, Oct. 14, with vendors being open for business from noon to 8 p.m. in the Rock Barn area. A quilt show, sponsored by the Scrappy Quilters, is scheduled at the former JCPenney building from 5 to 8 p.m. A talent show will be held in the Rock Barn pavillion area from 5:30 to 8 p.m., featuring local talent. An atlatl tournament will take place at Johnson Field, located in the Ebbe Sports Complex. The North 65 Center will hold a dance from 7 to 10 p.m. (doors open at 6 p.m.).
Saturday features a full slate of activities, beginning with the annual parade, sponsored by the Trenton Rotary Club, which begins at Crowder Road and Main Street and continues through the downtown area and down Ninth Street. “The Spirit of America” is the theme for this year’s parade, which gets under way at 8:30 a.m. and will feature many of the bands that will be performing later in the day in the Marching Band Festival. The band competitions will be taking place throughout the day at Trenton High School and C.F. Russell Stadium.
Other events on Saturday include the quilt show from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and atlatl competition during the morning hours. Vendors will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
A shuttle service will be offered from the parking lot of the First Baptist Church on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Sunday’s schedule starts with vendors being open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. along with the atlatl tournament at Johnson Field. The Mic-O-Say dancers will perform at 1 p.m. on the walkway just west of the pavillion area. The quilt show will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Trenton Elks Lodge No. 801 will hold a car show in downtown Trenton from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The show will be along Tinsman Avenue, north of Five Points.
In addition, the Grundy County Museum will be open on both Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. Art work by current and former Grundy County residents is the featured display.
