The Trenton Lady Bulldogs placed second at the Class 1, District 16 Tournament on Wednesday in Maryville, falling to the host school 5-0 in the championship dual. The team portion of the season is over for the Trenton high School girls’ tennis team. Trenton dropped the district championship dual to Maryville on Wednesday, falling 5-0 in Maryville.
The Lady Bulldogs finished the team season with a 14-2 record and a second-place district plaque. The team’s dual winning percentage of .875 set a new school record.
Things got off to a rocky start for the Lady Bulldogs against Maryville as Claire Utley and Lauren Dolan fell 8-4 in doubles action. Samantha Mihalovich and Madison Searcy fell 8-4 also as did the duo of Alainey Fair and Emma Gilham.
In singles play, Utley fell 6-1, 6-3 and Fair lost 6-1, 6-1 to seal the district title for Maryville. The remaining singles bouts were stopped in progress once Maryville reached the decisive fifth victory.
“I’m so excited for our second-place finish at districts,” Lady Bulldogs’ Head Coach Bobbie Hainey said. “The girls’ spent an entire season putting in the work needed to get to the finals and it paid off. They should be very proud.”
Trenton was seeking a third district team title, while the victory for Maryville gave the Lady Spoofhounds their first tennis championship in school history. Trenton last won a district title in 2012 and won the title in 2011 as well. Trenton was district runner-up in 2010.
The individual portion of the district tournament is being played today in Maryville. It began at 9 a.m.
