When the changes go into effect on Saturday regarding the sales tax charged in the city of Trenton, persons will find that the local tax still remains lower than many of the area communities.
With approval in April of the one-fourth of 1 percent sales tax for fire services, the city of Trenton’s new sales tax rate will be 7.975 percent. This compares to the 7.725 rate previously paid for goods and services in Trenton.
According to the Missouri Department of Revenue area sales tax rates as of July 1 range from a low of 7.225 percent in Carrollton to a high of 8.850 in Bethany. When you count in such communities as St. Joseph, Kansas City and Columbia, the rate goes as high as 10.350 percent.
Among other sales tax rates where local residents shop are Brookfield, 8.475 percent; Cameron, 7.975 to 8.475 percent; Chillicothe, 7.225 to 8.225 percent; Gallatin, 8.100 percent; Hamilton, 8.725 percent; Kansas City, 8.350 to 10.350 percent; Kearney, 7.225 to 8.225 percent; Kirksville, 7.850 to 8.850 percent; Liberty, 9.100 to 10.100 percent; Macon, 8.600 percent; Marceline, 7.725 percent; Maryville, 8.475 to 9.475 percent; St. Joseph, 8.450 to 9.950; Springfield, 7.850 to 8.600; and Columbia, 8.475 to 8.975.
Areas that show a range in percentages is a result of special sales taxes being assessed for specific projects such as improvement districts.
