October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. Outside of skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States.
To honor those individuals who are currently fighting breast cancer as well as those who have battled the disease in the past, Wright Memorial Hospital, along with the Wright Memorial Hospital Foundation and Hometown Pharmacy in Trenton, are once again hosting a Pink Balloon Launch on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 7:45 a.m. The event will be held on the Wright Memorial Hospital campus, and precedes the annual Wright Run 5K/10K, which is set to begin at 8 a.m.
Additionally, on Friday, Sept. 30, Trenton Mayor Nick McHargue will sign a proclamation designating Friday, Oct. 7 as city-wide Pink Out Day in Trenton. On that designated day, the community is encouraged to wear pink to work and school as well as to the high school football game that evening in support of breast cancer awareness.
“We hope to have a big turnout for the balloon launch and we hope to have a lot of support on Pink Out Day in the community,” said Gina Grime, manager of radiology at Wright Memorial Hospital. “More than 40,000 women die every year from breast cancer, but thousands more beat the disease each year. We want to raise awareness of the disease to hopefully save lives, but we also want to honor those who have lost their battle.”
The Trenton High School Key Club is also reminding community members that Friday is the deadline to order “Pink Out” shirts.
Trenton High School is hosting a “Pink Out’ night to be held on Friday, Oct. 7 during the football game against Maysville. The focus of the event is to raise funds and awareness and to show support to those in the school district and community who are currently fighting breast cancer and to demonstrate that no one fights alone.
The short sleeve t-shirt is pink and features the bulldog mascot and traditional pink ribbon logo with the slogan “Go Fight Cure!” Shirts are $10 each for youth small through adult XL and $12 for 2XL through 4XL.
Order forms are available on the district website at trentonr9.k12.mo.us under the Hot Topics heading. Shirts ordered by R-9 students and faculty/staff will be delivered to them at school. Orders from businesses will be delivered while orders from the community at large will need to be picked up.
All proceeds from shirt sales will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Questions can be directed to Kara Helmandollar, Key Club sponsor, at 359-5966 or 635-0526.
