Robert A. Hughs, a 73-year-old resident of Trenton, died on Monday morning, Sept. 19, 2016 at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016 at Union (Coon Creek) Baptist Church, west of Trenton, with Ron Ward and Rev. Doug Crawford officiating. Burial will be in the Edinburg Cemetery at Edinburg.
A family visitation will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2016 at the Slater Funeral Home in Trenton.
Mr. Hughs was born on June 27, 1943 in Brimson, the son of Lester Aude and Erma L. Brown Hughs. He attended Cole School at Brimson and graduated from Trenton High School. Before retiring he was employed by Trenton Foods as a maintenance coordinator. He was also a member the Edinburg Cemetery Board and ran the rodeo circuit for over 50 years as a calf roper. At age 69, he won the American Family Rodeo Association championship for ages 50 and over, after which he retired from roping.
He was a member and deacon of Union (Coon Creek) Baptist Church, west of Trenton.
He was married at Trenton on July 4, 1961 to Rita D. Chrisman, who survives of the home.
He is also survived by one daughter, Erma Newton and her husband, Lawrence of Brimson; two sons, Timothy Hughs and his wife, Cathy of Newburg and Kenneth Hughs and his wife, Sherri of Trenton; one sister, Nancy Maples and her husband, John of Brimson; one brother, Jerry Hughs and his wife, Linda of Brimson; eight grandchildren, Joshua Hughs, Chrystal Craig, Robert George Hughs, Ryan Hughs, Rodney Hughs, Rustin Hughs, Keona Jenkins and Kaila McClaflin; three step-grandchildren, Matthew Cannon, Jennifer Cannon and Jacee Devaul; nine great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Timothy Hughs; one granddaughter, Cara Hughs; two half-brothers, Russell Allen, and Ralph Allen; one half-sister, Loretta Allen Pelletier; one niece, Dorothy Chrisman; and one nephew, Matthew Chrisman.
Memorials are suggested to either the Coon Creek Cemetery or Edinburg Cemetery. They may be left at or mailed to the funeral home.
