Grundy R-5, Laredo R-7 Boards Discuss Graduation, Sports and Field Trips

Graduation dates and policy updates were among items addressed by area school boards during meetings on Monday night.
Grundy R-5
The Grundy R-5 Board of Education set its graduation date and discussed baseball during its meeting.
According to information provided by Superintendent Rob Deaver, graduation at Grundy R-5 High School will take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 7 at the high school. It was decided that boys baseball will be offered in both the fall and spring, with girls being able to play baseball on the boys team in the spring. The girls currently play softball in the fall.
Several polices were reviewed, with the board approving the new anti-bullying policy and tabling action on others until the October meeting. It was reported that year-to-date attendance is 95.47 percent at the high school and 98.51 percent at the elementary school. Discussion was held on a fire safety and crisis management program presented at the elementary school by the American Red Cross.
The board reviewed elementary school and seventh and eighth grade MAP results. It was announced that the Title I Family Night will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 29. Students of the Week at the elementary school were recognized. The board heard reports on fifth and sixth grade social studies and science, fifth grade English/Language Arts and K-12 library media services.
During an executive session, the board hired Ethan Bunnell as the assistant baseball coach and Randy Huff-man as the assistant softball coach. An early graduation request and part-time attendance request were also approved.
The next meeting of the board will be at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at the school in Galt.
Laredo R-7
The Laredo R-7 board approved several field trips and discussed the basketball program during its meeting.
According to information provided by Principal Misty Foster, the board approved three field trips for the fall. Students in grades five through eight will travel to the American Royal in Kansas City on Sept. 21, with students in grades three and four attending Old Time Harvest Days on Sept. 23. Students in grades kindergarten through second will travel to a pumpkin patch on Oct. 28.
A discussion was held about seventh and eighth grade basketball, with board members allowing fifth through eighth grade boys and sixth through eighth grade girls to participate in the program this year. The board also agreed to seek snow removal bids and reviewed the budget.
Other items approved by the board include the final transportation routes, the 2016 MSBA updates, participation in the Backpack Buddies program and the NEE Focus indicators. APR/MAP results were discussed as was district technology and Grandparents Day, which is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 7. The Christmas Program was scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 15.
Following an executive session to discuss personnel, the board voted to hire Kristy Sparks to fill in for the occupational therapist while she is on leave.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 10.
