The Trenton High School girls golf team battled a field of larger schools on Wednesday at the Richmond Girls Golf Tournament and came away with a ninth-place finish in a 15-school field.
Trenton battled the likes of Blue Springs, Liberty, Sedalia Smith-Cotton, Warrensburg and Kearney at the tournament, which was full of very large schools. The Lady Bulldogs carded a team score of 413 at the Shirkey Golf Course to give them their ninth-place finish.
Leading the way for the Lady Bulldogs was Kaitlyn Mounce, the only Trenton golfer to shoot in double digits at the tournament. Mounce turned in a score of 92 after shooting twin 46’s for her nine-hole splits. Hannah Kennebeck shot a front-nine 53 and back-nine 52 to card a 105 while Lana Raymo came around the 18-hole layout with a score of 107, shooting a 59 on the front and 48 on the back. Jordain Oshel rounded out the team total with a 109, getting a 53 on the front nine and a 56 on the back. Werthen Gass was also in action for Trenton, shooting a 113 with a front-nine 60 and back-nine 53.
“No medalists, but we played better than we did on Tuesday at Gallatin,” Lady Bulldogs’ Coach Travis Mullenix said. “We had a goal of 420 as a team and we beat that by seven strokes. Kaitlyn had a great day. Putting together two 46’s on Shirkey is solid. Hannah continued playing well and is becoming more consistent.
“I was really happy for Jordain. She had her best round of the year. She’s struggled a little bit during the early part of the season, but really had a good day finishing with a 109. Lana played some good golf, too. She just had a few holes that really hurt her score. Werthen has been working through some things and finally started playing better on the back nine. She’ll get it together.”
Trenton will return to dual action on Monday, traveling to Unionville to take on Putnam County, a Grand River Conference foe. Tee time for the event is set for 4 p.m.
