Grundy Splits Contests With East Harrison

The Grundy R-5 High School softball and baseball teams were at home in Galt on Tuesday night, playing host to the East Harrison Bobcats. Grundy took the softball contest 11-3, but couldn’t follow suit in the ensuing baseball game, falling 12-2.
Softball
The Grundy girls allowed a run in the top half of each of the first two frames, but responded both times. Grundy plated three in the first and two in the second to take a 5-2 lead into the third inning. East Harrison again posted a single tally in the top of the third, but it would be the Lady Bobcats’ final run of the night. Grundy tacked on six runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the game away.
“The girls played a great game,” Lady Panthers’ Coach Jessica Parsons said. “It feels good to get that first conference win.”
Zoe Littleton was one-for-three with a triple, two RBIs and a stolen base. Kendra Johnson went two-for-three with an RBI. In the circle, Matana Munday threw all seven innings, walking seven and striking out seven.
The win moved Grundy to 2-1 overall on the season and established a 1-0 record for the Lady Panthers in the HDC Conference.
Baseball
The Grundy boys struggled through the first inning of their baseball match-up with East Harrison, allowing over half of the visitor’s 12 runs in the opening frame. Ryan Metcalf would be the losing pitcher, allowing 10 runs, seven earned, despite not allowing a hit. He walked seven and struck out the lone batter he retired.
Andrew Garcia would throw three frames, allowing two unearned runs on one hit and four walks while striking out seven. Wayne Baxter threw the final inning and two-thirds, striking out four batters without allowing a hit or a walk.
At the plate, Blake Foster homered and drove in both Panther runs. Ben Busick and Lane Kenley also tallied hits for Grundy in the loss.
With the defeat, Grundy fell to 0-2 on the season.
Both the Grundy softball and baseball teams will be back on the diamond on Friday, traveling to Green City for a doubleheader. Action begins with the softball game at 5 p.m. and the baseball contest will follow.
From Monday
The Grundy softball team was in non-conference action on the road in Pattonsburg Monday night, falling 18-3 in three innings.
Grundy opened the game with a two-run top of the first, but Pattonsburg responded with nine runs in the bottom of the frame. Grundy was outscored 5-1 in the second inning and 4-0 in the third as Pattonsburg rolled.
Emma Novak was a bright spot in the loss, going two-for-two, and Matana Munday was one-for-two with a double.
“We have to learn to play through mistakes,” Parsons said. “It was a good learning game .”
