The Trenton High School softball team scored a huge win on Monday night, defeating a team that factors to be the top challenge to the Lady Bulldogs’ attempted repeat of last year’s district championship – the Hamilton Lady Hornets.
Trenton welcomed Hamilton to Griffin Field for the Lady Bulldogs’ first non-conference contest of the year and sent the visitors home with a 3-1 loss.
In a game that was a pitcher’s duel through four innings, Trenton plated all three of its runs in the fifth inning to pull off the victory. A Katerina Black single got the rally started and Taylor Richman followed, reaching on a Hamilton error. Ainsley Tolson would then walk to load the bases with two outs for Salem Croy. Croy played the hero role, driving a single that scored Tenna Roberts and Mykah Hurley, who were running for Black and Richman. Jaylen Neff followed with an RBI single of her own to score another pinch-runner in Lexi Whitaker.
Up 3-0, Trenton would need some help in the top of the sixth as Hamilton plated one run and was in position for more. Hurley came up big for Trenton, however, making a phenomenal running catch, but that was just the half of it. The Trenton sophomore then threw from the ground to double off a Hamilton runner at first base, ending the inning and the Hamilton threat.
“I thought we did a nice job in our first big test of the season,” Trenton Head Coach John Cowling said. “The girls handled the pressure well. Salem had a clutch hit to open up our lead and Mykah made an incredible play to end their rally in the sixth inning.”
Tolson would finish off the game with a 1-2-3 seventh inning, giving the Lady Bulldogs the key early-season district battle.
In all, the two teams combined for just seven hits in the game. Tolson was sharp in the circle, allowing just three hits and no walks while striking out nine. At the plate, Tolson was one-for-one with two walks. Croy finished one-for-three with two RBIs and Neff was one-for-three with an RBI. Black’s single was Trenton’s only other hit.
The victory moved the Lady Bulldogs to 3-0 on the season. Trenton will return to Grand River Conference action tonight, traveling down Highway 6 to take on Gallatin, which enters the game 0-1, both in the GRC and overall.
Junior Varsity
Trenton’s junior varsity girls finished tied with Hamilton’s JV at 1-1 after five innings.
Neither team could get much going offensively, as there were only six hits in the entire game. Ashten Whitaker led the Lady Bulldogs in the circle, throwing all five innings and allowing one run while striking out two.
The JV will take on Gallatin’s JV tonight, following the varsity match-up.
