Dean Sager presented the program to members of the Trenton Rotary Club on Thursday. Teresa Cross was the program chairman.
Sager and his wife, Pam, recently returned from a trip to China, where they spent time on both land and water while learning about the country and its culture. Sager’s first impression about the country was its beautiful landscaping, which he said was prevalent throughout the areas they visited. Because the country guarantees everyone a job, Sager said there is enough cheap labor to keep the Chinese landscape in good repair.
The couple began their trip in Beijing, which has a population of around 35 million. While there they visited Tiananmen Square as well as Mao Tse-tung’s mausoleum. There was also a trip to the Great Wall of China along with a visit to the Tombs of the Ming Dynasty and a rickshaw tour through the Hutong District, which in years past has been the home of many of the country’s wealthy residents.
The tour also took the Sagers to the town of Xi’An, where they visited the Drum Tower along with the Terra Cotta Army, which is located there. The couple also visited Chongquing, which is the location of a museum honoring the Chinese Army’s Flying Tigers from World War II. The couple also saw other cities as well, along with taking a boat tour down the Yangtzes River. While on the river, they were able to see the Three Gorges. There was also a stop at a school, where the students performed for the group.
During the business meeting, Jeff Crowley distributed tickets to be sold for the 13th annual Rotary Fish Fry, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Rock Barn. In addition to a meal, those purchasing tickets will also be able to see the movie “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for youth and can be purchased from any Rotary Club member.
The Missouri Day Parade Committee announced “The Spirit of America” as the theme for the 2016 Missouri Day Parade, which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 15. A meeting of the committee is planned for 4 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 15 in the Preferred Family conference room.
Next week’s program chairman is Rick Klinginsmith, with Trenton R-9 Athletic Director Wes Croy talking about the upcoming fall sports season.
