Dr. John Holcomb gave the program during Thursday’s meeting of the Trenton Rotary Club. Allan Seidel was the program chairman.
Dr. Holcomb, who is president of the Foundation Trust for THS, told about efforts to raise funds to put down a turf surface at C.F. Russell Stadium. THS graduate and University of Missouri wide receivers coach Andy Hill is spearheading the effort to raise the money that would allow the football field to have a turf surface, which Dr. Holcomb noted would allow for many uses of the field in addition to football without the weather having an effect. It is anticipated that the cost will be around $600,000 and that no school funds will be used for the surface and installation. A committee that has been formed to work on this effort also plans to raise funds that would be used for future maintenance of the turf, which is anticipated to last around 10 to 15 years before major maintenance would be required. The Trenton R-9 School District would be making all decisions regarding the turf as it will become property of the district once the project is completed.
Dr. Holcomb said that over $360,000 has already been raised by 47 individuals who have already made a contribution or pledged money to the project. The Foundation Trust is acting as a conduit for the money as it has not-for-profit status. He said that persons wanting more information about the project or wanting to make a pledge can contact Wendell Lenhart, Steve Maxey or himself. Donations can also be sent to the foundation at PO Box 85, Trenton, MO 64683.
During the business meeting, President Gary Jordan announced several upcoming events, including the district governor’s visit on Aug. 25, the annual club fish fry on Sept. 10 and a social on Sept. 29. The list of committees was also distributed to club members.
Next week’s program chairman is Teresa Cross.
