Large Crowd Turns Out To See Chillicothe Shut Out Nevada
Baseball fans in Trenton were treated to a big night Thursday as the Chillicothe Mudcats traveled north to host a home MINK League game at Burleigh Grimes Field for the fourth time in as many years. The large crowd didn’t go home disappointed, either, as Chillicothe shut out the visiting Nevada Griffons 6-0.
Chillicothe’s win came in large part to a familiar face in former North Central Missouri College Pirate Caleb Bounds. Bounds got the start and showed his best stuff, throwing seven shutout innings. He allowed just four hits and walked three in the seven frames and struck out a season-high 11 batters at his old stomping grounds in Trenton. The seven innings pitched also matched his previous high this season.
Bounds got the job done against a solid Nevada lineup, too. The Griffons entered the contest winners of four of their last five. Their overall record of 19-11 led the MINK League South Division.
But Bounds had little trouble navigating the Griffons’ lineup. After his seven shutout innings, Bounds now has a streak of 15 2/3 scoreless innings pitched and hasn’t allowed a run in a game since June 29.
Ryne Dowling relieved Bounds after the former Pirate fired 120 pitches in his seven frames of work. Dowling scattered five hits and a walk in the game’s final two frames, but didn’t allow a run while striking out two as he completed the shutout.
Offensively, the Mudcats plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, two more in the bottom of the fourth and two in the bottom of the seventh. The Mudcats’ designated hitter, John Remick, led the way at the plate, going three-for-four with two runs batted in. Ryan Kayhill also drove in two runs for Chillicothe, going one-for-five and adding a run scored. Ryan McPhail had a hit, RBI and two runs scored and Nick Banman and Alex Goodwin each scored a run as well with Goodwin adding two hits.
With the win, Chillicothe moved to 24-12 on the season and sits just one game back of St. Joseph in the MINK League North standings. Nevada fell to 19-12 on the season, but still leads the MINK League South by one-half game over Joplin.
The two teams will square off again tonight in a doubleheader to complete the three-game series. Game one is scheduled for 6:05 at Shaffer Park in Chillicothe.
