The Trenton Blue Jays AAA American Legion baseball team ran a 3-0 record over the weekend, winning the Chillicothe Tournament with wins over the host team as well as Moberly and the North Central Falcons.
Trenton opened the tournament Friday night, defeating Chillicothe 10-5 and then followed that up with a 4-2 win over Moberly and an 8-0 win over North Central on Saturday.
The ’Jays’ offense wasted little time Friday against Chillicothe, plating 10 runs on 16 hits. Trae Brownell drove in five of the Blue Jay runs, collecting three hits in the game. Aaron Bufford had three hits and two RBIs and Hadley Williams tacked on three hits and one RBI. Trenton also got an RBI and two hits from Ty Figg and three hits from Derek Hussey. Zach Powell had two hits in the win.
On the hill, Bufford picked up the win, allowing five runs, three earned, on seven hits while striking out 10 batters in six innings of work.
On Saturday, Trenton didn’t get quite as much offense against Moberly, but Wyatt Thomas threw six innings, allowing two unearned runs on five hits while striking out five. Brownell took it from there, throwing the final inning to earn a save. He allowed no runs and no hits, striking out the side in the seventh.
Offensively, Trenton did just enough, plating four runs on six hits. Lane Widner had two hits and two RBIs and Brownell had two hits as well. Bufford had a hit and an RBI, Hussey drove in one as well and Tristan Sewell had the final hit for Trenton.
The Blue Jays closed out the tournament with a shutout of the North Central Falcons to win the title. Brownell fired a six-inning shutout, allowing just two hits in the contest while striking out nine.
The Blue Jays offense again tallied six hits, but managed eight runs. Hussey had two hits and two RBIs and Brownell helped his cause with a hit and two RBIs. Sewell, Hadley Williams and Camden Williams all had one hit and one RBI each and Bufford drove in a run as well.
With the tournament sweep, Trenton improved to 8-1 overall on the season. The Blue Jays still hold a 3-0 record in district play.
The ’Jays will be back on the diamond on Wednesday, facing Chillicothe in a doubleheader at Burleigh Grimes Field in Trenton. The first pitch is set for 6 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but has been pushed back to Wednesday.
