The Trenton Blue Jays AAA American Legion baseball team was in action over the weekend, traveling to Hannibal for a doubleheader on Saturday and hosting Moberly in a doubleheader at Burleigh Grimes Field on Sunday.
Trenton won three of the four games played over the weekend, sweeping Hannibal on Saturday and drawing a split with Moberly on Sunday.
Saturday
Trenton edged defending district champion Hannibal in the opener on Saturday, taking the game 9-8. Aaron Buford was the winning pitcher, throwing six and one-third innings and allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out eight batters. Wyatt Thomas fired the final two-thirds of an inning, striking out two and allowing one hit.
Offensively, the Blue Jays plated nine runs on 10 hits with Buford collecting two hits and driving in a team-high four runs. Hadley Williams added three hits and two RBIs and Ty Figg had two hits and two RBIs. Trenton also got two hits from Derek Hussey and a hit and an RBI from Tanner Hudson.
Game two was a bit of a more comfortable win for the Blue Jays, who took the second contest 10-4. Thomas followed up his save in game one with a win in game two, throwing five innings and allowing two earned runs on seven hits while striking out five.
The Blue Jays’ offense continued to hit well, piling up 10 runs on 13 hits in game two. Buford had three hits and two RBIs and Williams had two hits and an RBI. Bryce Long had a hit and two RBIs and Hussey added one hit and one RBI. Trae Brownell tallied two hits, one a triple, and Reed Henderson, Troy Figg and Nick Hartley all had one hit each to round out the Blue Jay attack.
Sunday
Trenton was at home for the first time on Sunday, playing host to Moberly at Burleigh Grimes Field. Trenton ran away with game one, winning 11-1. Brownell threw six innings in the opener, allowing one run on four hits while striking out eight on the way to being the game’s winning pitcher.
At the plate, Trenton had 11 runs on 10 hits with Buford and Brownell each collecting two hits and two RBIs. Ty Figg had two hits as well and Hadley Williams drove in two runs on one hit. Tristan Sewell and Camden Williams each had one hit and one RBI and Stanton Blake collected one hit as well.
Trenton dropped its only game of the weekend in game two, falling to Moberly 10-5. Sewell was the losing pitcher, allowing seven earned runs on six hits while striking out two in two and one-third innings.
Hadley Williams led the offense with a solo home run and Lane Widner had a hit and an RBI also. Buford accounted for the Blue Jays’ final hit.
With the 3-1 showing over the weekend, Trenton moved to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in district play. The Blue Jays will be back on the diamond this weekend in the Chillicothe Tournament. Trenton takes on host Chillicothe at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and Brookfield at noon on Saturday. On Sunday, Trenton wraps up the tournament, taking on Moberly at noon and the Smithton Storm at 5 p.m.
