Curbing and sidewalks at the Trenton High School parking lot/Ebbe Sports Complex were among the discussion items at the June meeting of the Trenton Park Board on Wednesday night.
The board agreed to pay one-third of the cost of curbing and sidewalks along the south edge of the parking lot by the Ebbe Sports Complex. The project with the Trenton R-9 School District will involve the park board paying $3,000 for the improvements. In addition, the board agreed to spend around $800 to construct sidewalks that will connect Johnson and Griffin fields to the parking lot and to each other. It is hoped that at some point in the future a sidewalk can be constructed all the way to the restroom facility at the south end of the complex.
The board also voted to allow the North Central Missouri Fair Board to use the grandstand area July 22-24 for a rodeo. Those dates are outside the usual three-week window that the fair board has use of the fairgrounds, so special permission was needed.
Park Superintendent Jason Shuler reported that work is still under way on the new shop building and board members agreed to have Joe DeVorss construct a concrete approach to the shop parking lot while he is already in that area doing other work. It was announced that the aquatic center is open and there have been good crowds. Work is also continuing on the disc golf course and discussions are being held with representatives of North Central Missouri College and the Trenton R-9 School District about the fee structure and maintenance costs for the ballfield facilities.
“We don’t need them (ballfields) at a high caliber but that’s where we’re at and it will take dollars to keep them there,” Shuler said.
In other business, the board:
• accepted a $1,000 donation from the Trenton Area Chamber of Commerce for the renovation of the restrooms at the Rock Barn. The chamber had earlier pledged to help pay for the project.
• learned that Daniel Gott has resigned from his position on the board due to scheduling conflicts with classes he will be taking.
• was reminded of the Drive One 4UR Community event, which will be held from 9 a.m to 4 p.m. on Saturday in the Trenton Middle School parking lot. Each test drive of a Ford vehicle will result in a $20 donation to the Friends of the Park, which is in the midst of a fundraising effort to provide money for a handicapped accessible playground.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, July 6.
