Trenton Girls Runner-Up, Boys Fifth At Irish Relays In St. Joseph

The Trenton High School track and field teams were on the road in St. Joseph on Thursday, competing at the Irish Relays at Lafayette High School. The Trenton girls finished runner-up at the meet, collecting 95 points, second only to Chillicothe’s 159.5 in the team standings. The Trenton boys meanwhile, were fifth in the 11-team field, scoring 83.5 team points.
LADY BULLDOGS
The Trenton girls got a strong day in the field, carrying them to a runner-up finish. Trenton won three events at the meet, all of which came in the field.
Shayla Woodside, Salem Croy and Ally Ockenfels all picked up individual gold medals. Woodside won the long jump with a mark of 15-3.75 and Ockenfels won the shot put with a throw of 37-3. Croy won the javelin, which turned out to be a big point event for the Lady Bulldogs. Croy won with a throw of 104-3 and her teammate Sidney Lynch was second in the event with a throw of 96-9.
Croy added two fourth-place finishes to her day, placing fourth in the discus with a throw of 97-7 and fourth in the shot put with a throw of 34-1.
Other placewinners in the field for Trenton included Woodside, sixth in the triple jump with a mark of 30-10.5; and Maycie Mayfield, eighth in the triple jump with a mark of 30-3.5.
In all, the Lady Bulldogs netted 52 points, more than half of their team total, in the field. That came without a pole vault event, which has been one of Trenton’s strongest events this season with Mason Hooyman and Mayfield consistently at the top in the event.
On the track, Trenton placed in all four relay events. The 4×400-meter relay team of Thelma Guerrero, Woodside, Hannah Mehrhoff and Tenna Roberts was second with a time of 4:22.62 and the 4×800-meter relay team of Roberts, Mehrhoff, Abbie Shuler and Jessi Westcott was second as well, finishing with a time of 11:04.95. Guerrero, Hooyman, Shuler and Mehrhoff combined to place fifth in the 4×200-meter relay with a time of 1:56.97 and sixth in the 4×100-meter relay with a time of 55.62.
Individual placewinners on the track for the Lady Bulldogs included Jakolbie Stotts, fourth in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 14:48 and seventh in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 6:34.25; Mayfield, fifth in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 14:50.46; Roberts, fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:46.53; Karli Provorse, sixth in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 6:27.60; and Westcott, seventh in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:51.58.
Behind Chillicothe and Trenton in the team standings were Richmond with 77.5 points, Savannah with 56.5 and Maryville rounded out the top five with 55.
BULLDOGS
The Trenton boys didn’t win any events and only had one runner-up finish, yet still placed themselves in the top five of the team standings thanks to 19 placewinning performances.
The 4×800-meter relay team had the highest finish on the day for the Bulldogs, taking second. Jose Barron, Carson Radcliff, Cole Schilling and Zane Rottman combined to finish runner-up with a time of 8:55.36. Trenton placed in the 4×400- and 4×200-meter relays as well. Wyatt Whittle, Travis Leeper, Jonathan Lamp and Trey Shields combined to place fourth in the 4×400 and Lamp, Whittle, Austin Burkeybile and Shields finished fourth in the 4×200 with a time of 1:36.41.
Individually, Burkeybile and Leeper were third and fourth, respectively, in the long jump with Burkeybile hitting 19-11.25 and Leeper hitting 19-6. The Bulldogs double-placed in the discus as well with Jadan Whitney throwing 130-9.5 for fifth place and Connor Cotton throwing 123-1 for sixth place. Avery Cooksey tied for third in the high jump with a mark of 5-6 and Cole Schilling was fifth in the javelin with a throw of 116-3 to round out the Bulldogs’ placewinners in the field.
On the track, Lamp was fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.57 and Barron was fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:13.69. Trenton would double-place in four other events to round out its team total of 83.5 points.
In the 3,200-meter run, Daniel Rodriguez was third with a time of 11:11.46 and Drew Rorebeck was seventh with a time of 11:42.69. In the 1,600-meter run, Rottman was fourth with a time of 5:02.12 and Rodriguez was sixth with a time of 5:04.09. In the 110-meter hurdles, Matthew Sibbit was fifth with a time of 18.75 and Chase Marsh was sixth with a time of 18.91. In the 300-meter hurdles Radcliff was fifth with a time of 45.78 and Sibbit was sixth with a time of 46.75.
In the team standings, Chillicothe won the boys’ title with 150 points to top runner-up Maryville, which had 95.82 points. Benton was third with 94 points and Bishop Hogan was fourth, just ahead of Trenton, with 88 points.

The Trenton track and field teams will return to St. Joseph on Monday to wrap up the regular season with their last tune-up before districts – the Benton Relays. Action at Benton is set to begin with field events at 3:30 p.m.
