May 2, 2016 | Softball, Sports & Recreation

The North Central Missouri College softball team went 2-2 over the weekend at the NJCAA Division I, Region 16 Tournament at Battle High School in Columbia. The Lady Pirates topped St. Charles 7-5 in the opening round before falling to Jefferson 13-1 later on Friday. On Saturday, the Lady Pirates kept their run alive with an 8-4 win over Three Rivers before St. Charles came back to end the Lady Pirates’ season with a 10-6 win.
vs. ST. CHARLES
The Lady Pirates scored four runs in the third inning and three in the fourth to top St. Charles in the opening round on Friday.
Courtney Seymour and McKinley Hurley were both two-for-four with two runs scored and Madi Trump and TeriAnna Mohler each had one hit, two RBIs and one run scored.
In the circle, Alison Hilsabeck (13-3) was the winning pitcher, allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits and four walks while striking out two in four and two-thirds innings.
vs. JEFFERSON
The Lady Pirates were bumped to the loser’s bracket in the second round, falling 13-1 to second-seeded Jefferson. NCMC managed just two hits in the loss, one from Hurley, who scored the Lady Pirates’ lone run, and the other from Trump, who drove Hurley home with an RBI double.
Jessica Stupar (13-10) took the loss, allowing 13 runs, eight earned, on 13 hits and one walk while striking out two in four innings pitched. NCMC committed three errors in the field behind Stupar.
vs. THREE RIVERS
North Central found itself trailing 1-0 in the second inning when rain delayed their game with Three Rivers. After the delay, however, NCMC tied the game at 1-1. Both teams plated three runs each in the fourth inning and the 4-4 tie would hold through the scheduled seven innings. The Lady Pirates doubled their total in the top of the eighth, however, and then shut down Three Rivers in the bottom of the frame to keep their season alive.
Hurley had two more hits, a run and an RBI and Trump was one-for-two with a home run, three walks, a stolen base and four RBIs. Bethany Jacobsen was one-for-two with a double, three runs scored and two RBIs and Aubrey Nelson had two hits and an RBI.
In the circle, Hilsabeck started and threw four innings, allowing four runs on 10 hits and four walks while striking out 1. Stupar (14-10) threw the final four innings, allowing no runs on four hits and one walk while striking out one to pick up the win.
vs. ST. CHARLES
The Lady Pirates went back up against St. Charles in their second-round game in the loser’s bracket. This time, however, NCMC wasn’t able to come away with a win as their season ended with a 10-6 loss.
The Lady Pirates led 3-0 until the top of the third inning, when St. Charles tied the game at 3-3. After trading runs in the fourth, St. Charles broke the tie yet again with two runs in the fifth and followed with three in the sixth and one in the seventh to pull away for the win.
Seymour, Hurley and Jacobsen all had three hits each in the game with Jacobsen scoring twice and Seymour scoring once. Mohler had two hits, one a home run, and three RBIs and Trump had two hits and a run scored. Nelson was two-for-four with a solo home run.
Stupar (14-11) took the loss, allowing eight runs, only four of which were earned, on six hits and a walk while striking out three in five and two-thirds innings. Jacobsen allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits and two walks while striking out one over the final one and one-third innings.
With the loss, NCMC closed the season with a 31-17 overall record.
ALL-REGION
The Lady Pirates had five players receive All-Region 16 honors. Trump and Seymour were both named to the first team while Mohler, Hilsabeck and Rachael Balke were all second-team selections.
Trump led all vote-getters for battery positions (pitchers and catchers) and is now eligible for the NJCAA All-American team. Voting for that team will not take place until after the national tournament.
