BULLDOGS
The Trenton boys had chased Putnam County and South Harrison at multiple meets earlier in the season, but got the job done against their foes on their home track.
“I was really proud of our boys and pleased with our performance,” Bulldogs’ Head Coach Brandon Boswell said. “We’ve struggled with Putnam County and South Harrison the last few meets because they are so talented, so it was nice to finally see us perform as well as we did.”
Trenton was paced by a trio of gold medalists, accounting for 30 of the Bulldogs’ 85 team points. Mark Trump won the high jump, clearing 5-2, Carson Burchett won the shot put with a throw of 45-3 and Sam Schilling won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.64.
Other top three placewinners for the Bulldogs included Dalton Burchett, second in the shot put with a throw of 39-9; Jose Velazquez, second in the triple jump with a mark of 34-0, second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.64 and third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.14; the 4×100-meter relay team of Trump, Quincy Griffin, David Felix and Velazquez, third with a time of 52.21; Quentin Hughs, third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.83; and Schilling, tied for third in the high jump with a mark of 4-10.
LADY BULLDOGS
The Trenton girls barely missed a team title, but the second place showing marked the third meet in a row where the Lady Bulldogs placed in the top two in the team standings.
Lexi Whitaker had a big day down the stretch, anchoring the 4×400-meter relay team which won with a time of 4:38.7. She was joined by McKayla Blackburn, Kennedy Norton and Emily Kosse in winning that event. Whitaker also took gold in the high jump, winning after clearing 4-6.
“The girls competed well tonight at our home event,” Lady Bulldogs’ Head Coach Jon Guthrie said. “As a team they’ve done well the last three meets, winning one, and finishing second in back-to-back meets. The relay teams posted excellent times today and had a good track meet. Individually, the girls are taking pride in trying to improve on their jumps, throws, and times in opens and individual events. Lexi Whitaker showed a lot of grit at the end of the meet. She finished the last leg of the 4X400-meter relay and still had to finish high jump and was able to get 10 team points. Overall, I’m proud of how the whole team performed at C.F. Russell today.”
Whitaker also anchored the 4×100-meter relay team, which won Trenton’s third gold medal at the meet. Whitaker combined with Norton, Lexi Gott and Maci Moore to win that event with a time of 56.6.
Other top-three performers for the Lady Bulldogs on the day included Shawna Coplen, second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:07.34 and third in the triple jump with a mark of 27-9.75; Allena Allen, second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:50.27; the 4×200-meter relay team of Coplen, Blackburn, Norton and Whitaker, second with a time of 1:58.21; Kendall Crowly, third in the discus with a throw of 77-7; Moore, third in the shot put with a throw of 33-7; and Gwyneth Foster, third in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 6:24.16.
