The Trenton High School boys’ golf team sent four golfers to the Macon Junior Varsity Tournament on Monday and the squad returned to Trenton with a fourth-place finish in a 12-team field.
The Bulldogs carded a team score of 405, placing behind two Jefferson City Helias squads, one shooting a 359 and the other carding a 374, and Kirksville, which came around the 18-hole layout with a team mark of 384.
Trenton placed three of its four inside the top 15, earning those golfers medals at the meet. Tucker Franklin was the lead dog for Trenton, carding a score of 84. Franklin had a 44 on the front nine and a 40 on the back to reach his mark, which was good for second overall individually at the tournament. Franklin was just three strokes behind Helias’ Caleb Albertson, who shot a tournament-low 81.
“Tucker is playing very well,” Coach Travis Mullenix said. “He is hitting his fairways and that really helps your score when you can get off the tee in good order.”
Behind Franklin, Trenton got a 96 from Conner Lovell, which was good for a tie for ninth individually. Lovell had 51 on the front and a 45 on the back to reach his total.
“Conner had a great day,” Mullenix said. “I was very happy that he medaled. He has a great attitude and its nice to see him enjoy some success.”
Luke Lewis followed with a 97, placing him 12th individually at the tournament. Lewis carded a 51 on the front nine and a 46 on the back to reach his total and earn Trenton’s third medal of the tournament.
“Luke didn’t have a great day but still medaled, so he should be proud of that,” Mullenix said. “He has a little injury that was hindering his turn but is going to be fine.”
Rounding out the team score was Cade Darting, who had a 128 with nine-hole marks of 66 and 62.
