The Trenton Bulldog boys tennis team was in action at the Kirksville Tournament over the weekend, going 1-2 in matches against Kirksville, Grain Valley and Chillicothe. Doubles matches for all three duals were played on Friday while singles matches were contested on Saturday.
The Bulldogs wound up with 9-0 losses to Kirksville and Grain Valley, but picked up a 5-4 win over Chillicothe.
Trenton got off to a rough start on Friday, falling in all three doubles matches to all three opponents. Against Grain Valley, Jacob Davis and Nick Shields lost 10-3, Bryce Whitney and Kade Ockenfels fell 10-7 and Creed Houghton and Wyatt Neal lost 10-2. Kirksville handed Davis and Shields a 10-0 loss, beat Ockenfels and Whitney 10-4 and topped Houghton and Neal 11-10 in the Bulldogs’ closest match of the day, one that took a tiebreaker to determine a winner. Chillicothe then beat Davis and Shields 10-4. Ockenfels and Whitney 10-8 and Neal and Houghton 10-2.
In singles’ play on Saturday, things picked right back up where they left off for the Bulldogs. Grain Valley topped Davis 10-5, Shields 10-3, Whitney 10-1, Ockenfels 10-1, Houghton 10-2 and Neal 10-2. Kirksville swept the Bulldogs as well, beating Davis 10-1, Shields 10-4, Whitney 10-5, Ockenfels 10-4, Houghton 10-3 and Neal 10-3.
Trenton finally caught a break as Chillicothe was open at one, two and three in the final dual of the day. Davis, Shields and Whitney all got wins by forfeit, evening the dual at 3-3 after Chillicothe swept doubles play on Friday. Trenton won two of the remaining three singles matches to take the dual 5-4. Ockenfels won 10-5, Houghton lost 10-5 and Neal sealed the deal with a 10-8 win.
The 1-2 showing at the tournament pushed the Bulldogs’ dual season record to 3-5.

Trenton will be back on the court today, traveling to St. Joseph for a match with LeBlond. First serves for the dual are set for 4 p.m.
