Maria Martinez, a resident of Argentina who is an exchange student through Rotary International, was the speaker at Thursday’s meeting of the Trenton Rotary Club. Chris Hoffman was the program chairman.
Miss Martinez has been spending the school year in Trenton, arriving in September, and will be here through the end of June. She has been living with four host families and is currently staying with the Ronnie and Martha Roberts family. Other hosts have included Phil and Connie Hoffman, Tim and Davina Gilham and Brad and Christie Tolson.
Miss Martinez lives in Tandil, Argentina, a community of around 2,000 persons, with her family. Her father is a farmer and coach. She has one brother and three sisters, one of whom is her twin sister. She was a member of the Rotaract Club at her school, which got her interested in the exchange program. Although she had the chance to go to Italy for a year, she chose the U.S. because, she said, she wanted to learn English.
Miss Martinez is very active at Trenton High School, serving as manager of the track team and president of the Spanish Club. She has also had the chance to visit some places and will be taking a tour of the U.S. with other Rotary exchange students at the end of her stay.
During the business meeting, final plans were made for the “Trenton’s Got Talent” fundraiser the club will be holding on Saturday, April 23 at Trenton High School. A variety of entertainment will be presented by youth of the community. Tickets for the program, which includes a dessert bar at intermission, are $5 each and may be purchased at Hometown Pharmacy, the Trenton R-9 School District, GFG and the Trenton Republican-Times.
Next week’s program chairman is Scott Forman. The program will be about the Charlie Dye Bridge.
