Mrs. Burns was born on Aug. 31, 1931 the daughter of Earl R. and Addie Jenkins Groves near Jameson, where she graduated from Jameson R-3 High School in 1949. She was married on Oct. 6, 1950 in Kansas City to Wilbur Burns. The couple made their home on a farm near Coffey before moving to the Davis farm, west of Jameson, where they raised their children and farmed for 49 years. She was a homemaker in every sense of the word, always caring for her family’s needs.
She was employed at the Jameson School for many years in the kitchen; meal planning and preparing meals for the students and faculty. In those days food was prepared by scratch and each day was a new challenge which she met with great enthusiasm, her homemade cinnamon rolls were always a treat. She took a job at the nursing home in Gallatin as a cook for a short period of time before returning to Jameson in the cafeteria. She enjoyed interacting with the students and always had their best interest at heart. She dedicated many years to a profession she dearly loved.
The couple moved to Lake Viking in 2002 to enjoy retirement and the amenities of the lake.
Mrs. Burns was a member of the Highway Christian Church near Bethany and later attended the Lake Viking Church. She enjoyed the fellowship she shared with her church family. She was a past member of the Lake Viking Homemakers Club and volunteered for many years at the Seventh Day Adventist Thrift Store. In her spare time she liked to read and visit with her friends. Margaret attended and enjoyed the activities in which her grandchildren participated, always cheering them on. She adored her family and spending time with them was always special. She was a social lady who could strike up a conversation with anyone. Her infectious smile and attitude toward life was inspiring. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend who will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her daughter, Jean Dustman and her husband, Lynn of Laredo; grandson, Brent Dustman and his wife Tammy, of Jamesport; granddaughters, Mika Stelzer and her husband, Ben of Trenton and Lindsey Bond and husband, Seth of Galt; great-grand grandchildren, Brooke and Tori Dustman, Cole and Mikael Stelzer and Taylor Bond; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 57 years, Wilbur Burns; sons, Terry Michael and Dennis Dean Burns; brothers, John and Henry Groves; sisters, Lily Mae Cook, Virginia McDonald, Dolly Frost, Dorothy Burns and Elizabeth Ballard; and two infant sisters.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Jameson Community Betterment Fund or Civil Bend Christian Cemetery in care of McWilliams Funeral Home in Gallatin.
