Apr 12, 2016 | Track

The Trenton Middle School track and field teams were on the road Monday, competing at the South Harrison Bulldog Relays in Bethany. Trenton returned home with the girls’ title in hand while finishing second on the boys’ side.
LADY BULLDOGS
The Trenton girls won the meet with 112 team points, besting a field that included 16 schools. Worth County was runner-up to the Lady Bulldogs, finishing with 100 points and Hamilton rounded out the top three with 81.
Trenton dominated the relays, winning gold in all three events. The 4×100-meter relay team of Kennedy Norton, Shawna Coplen, Maci Moore and Lexi Whitaker won with a time of 58.62 and the 4×200-meter relay team of Coplen, McKayla Blackburn, Norton and Whitaker won with a time of 2:01.37. In the final event of the night, the 4×400-meter relay, Coplen, Blackburn, Norton and Whitaker again combined for Trenton’s third gold medal of the meet, winning with a time of 4:42.
Individually, Blackburn was second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:11.69 and second in the triple jump with a mark of 27-5; Ann Airey was second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.3; Allena Allen was second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:48; Maci Moore was second in the shot put with a throw of 32-1; Whitaker was second in the high jump with a mark of 4-6 and Gwyneth Foster was third in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 6:26 and third in the long jump with a mark of 12-8.
“I was very proud of the girl’s effort at the track meet,” Lady Bulldogs’ Coach Jon Guthrie said. “The relay teams stepped up and fought hard to win all three of their events. Individually, it was a competitive track meet. The girls worked hard at pushing themselves for team points, even if they weren’t seeded at the top of their event. That really made the difference and helped us win.”
BULLDOGS
The Trenton boys had somewhat of a tough day, netting just eight top-three finishes at the meet while collecting 97.5 points. Of those eight top-three finishers, three were gold-medal winners. Sam Schilling took first in the 100-meter hurdles, Mark Trump was first in the high jump and Carson Burchett won the shot put.
Behind that trio, Jose Velazquez placed second in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Dalton Burchett was second in the shot put and Quentin Highs placed third in the 400-meter dash. Trenton’s 4×100-meter relay team of Trump, David Felix, Quincy Griffin and Velazquez placed second to round out the top-three performers for the Bulldogs. Times and distances were not available.
South Harrison took top honors on the boys side with 97.66 points. Gallatin was third with 70.16 points.
“We didn’t perform very well as a team,” Bulldogs’ Coach Brandon Boswell said. “Our boys were disappointed and are looking forward to improving from this meet. We did, however, have some boys that performed very well individually. We will look to rebound when we head to Unionville on Thursday.”
