The newly-formed Green Hills Recreation Association was the topic of a program presented by Scott Blair during Thursday’s Trenton Rotary Club meeting. Andrea Merrin was the program chairman.
Blair, who serves as chairman of the board for the GHRA, talked about how the association was formed as the result of a meeting held one year ago that determined organized recreational activities were needed in the community. When the local TBA decided to disband earlier this year, the association stepped up to the plate and took over organization of a summer ball program, with over 330 youth having signed up to play t-ball, softball and baseball this summer. Committees have been formed within the organization to head up various activities, including coaching, scheduling and fundraising.
Because of the expense of equipment and other needs for the program, the GHRA has sponsorships available as a way for persons, organizations and businesses to be a part of the GHRA. For a platinum, or $500, donation, contributors get to sponsor a team of their choice along with receiving a plaque with the team’s photo, have their name included on a banner to be displayed at the field on which the team plays and sponsorship of a winter league team. A gold, or $250 to $299, donation includes co-sponsorship of a team, the plaque with the photo and their name included on the public banner. A silver, $249 and under, donation allows for a summer league sponsorship and their name included on the banner.
The group is hoping to have basketball for youth during the winter months and there is a committee working on that. Other recreational activities being discussed include flag football, soccer and dodge ball.
It was decided by the Rotary Board of Directors after the meeting to make a $500 donation to sponsor a team this summer.
During the business meeting, it was announced that the club had received a certificate of appreciation from the Salvation Army for participating in the bellringing campaign at Christmas. During the two days the club worked, $1,162.25 was raised.
It was announced that the Trenton R-9 School District would hold a Birthday Bash Dash on Saturday, April 9 at C.F. Russell Stadium. This is a change in location of what had been previously announced. The Rotary Club’s fundraiser, “Trenton’s Got Talent,” will be held on April 23 in the THS gym. Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased at the Trenton R-9 District office, the Republican-Times, GFG and Hometown Pharmacy.
Next week’s program chairman is Debbie Carman with the proposed Trenton fire tax being the topic.
