Personnel and the school calendar were among action taken by the Grundy R-5 and the Tri-County R-7 boards of education during meetings this week.
Grundy R-5
According to information provided by Superintendent Rob Deaver, the R-5 board on Thursday night voted to rehire all full-time certified teachers for the 2016-17 school year. The vote was taken following an executive session in which a student matter was also addressed.
Following a public hearing, the board voted to approve the 2016-17 school calendar. Classes will begin on Wednesday, Aug. 17, with the last day of school being on Friday, May 12, 2017.
The board heard an update on maintenance items with all roof repairs having been completed at the elementary and high school buildings. A new metal roof was also put on the old science building at the high school, which will also be getting new guttering in the next few weeks. The board also discussed the possibility of purchasing two new lawnmowers and trading in the two now being used.
The board approved the program evaluation for technology and also heard reports from the elementary and secondary principals. Year-to-date attendance at the elementary school is at 94.1 percent while the junior/senior high attendance rate is 96.04 percent. The high school girls softball team was recognized for being named an all-state academic team with Makenzy Brown, Zoe Littleton, Emily Milazzo and Matana Munday receiving individual academic all-state awards. A donation of two pairs of basketball shoes and one pair of tennis shoes to the elementary school by Kelly Billington was also recognized.
The next regular meeting of the R-5 Board of Education will be at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 14 at the high school in Galt.
Tri-County R-7
During Tuesday night’s meeting of the Tri-County R-7 Board of Education, the board voted to renew all returning tenured and non-tenured elementary and high school teachers for the next school year.
Superintendent David Probasco reported that the board also approved the salary proposals from the certified and non-certified staff for next school year. Certified staff will receive a 1.5 percent increase in their base pay along with a step for years of service on the salary schedule. Non-certified staff will receive the same increases, 1.5 percent on the base and a step for years of service.
Extra duty pay changes were also approved as well as an increase for substitute pay, which will go from $70 to $80 per day. A budget revision was also approved.
The board agreed to purchase two buses at a cost of $12,847 and declared another bus as surplus property. Bids will be sought to sell that bus and will be opened at the next meeting.
The board approved a bid from John Troyer to repair roof on various buildings at a cost of $69,402. Bids were also approved from Sargent’s Glass to replace exterior doors, from Chris Kiddoo Hardwood Floors to refinish and paint the gym floor, from School Outfitters for lockers at the high school and middle school and from Terry Implement for a new mower.
Superintendent and principal reports were also given.
The next meeting of the board is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 7.
