The Mercer High School boys’ basketball team punched its ticket to a district championship game on Wednesday night, defeating host school Green City in the Class 1, District 12 Tournament semifinals.
Mercer used a 19-7 run in the first quarter to set the tone. After playing Green City evenly in the second quarter, Mercer put the game away with a 16-8 run in the third quarter and then cruised through the fourth for the 23-point win.
The Cardinals were led by Trey Wilson’s 12 points and Galt Porter added 11. Mercer also got 10 points each from Bryer Noe and Alec Patterson. Cash Hartley and Grey Porter each scored four points and Matthew Johnson rounded out the team’s total with two points.
Mercer improved to 21-4 on the season with the victory and will take on Novinger in the district championship game on Friday. Tip time for the championship game in Green City is set for 7:30 p.m.
