Feb 9, 2016 | School Board, School News

The Laredo R-7 Board of Education approved its school calendar for the 2016-2017 school year, approved two field trips and accepted a resignation during a meeting held Monday evening at the school.
According to information provided by the district, the board approved the 2016-2017 school calendar after a time of public comment as required by state statute. The first day of school will be Aug. 24, with the last day set for May 10, 2017, however, any bad weather make-up days will be added to the end of the year.
The board approved a field trip for students in kindergarten through second to Kaleidoscope at Crown Center on April 21. Also approved was a trip to I-Fly, also in Kansas City, for eighth grade students on May 2. The board approved tuck-pointing to be done on the west and south sides of the gym.
It was announced that only two candidates, incumbents Kristi Urich and Sheila Thompson, have filed for board seats in the April 5 election. Since there are only two vacant seats, no election will be held.
In new business, the board voted to allow the Grundy County Health Department to hold a health fair at the school for district employees, with the board paying for the Total Basic Package ($20) for each participating staff member as a way to promote employee wellness. The date for the health fair has been set for March 15. Board members also agreed to seek bids for the audit and for mowing, with both sets of bids to be reviewed at the March meeting.
Administrative reports included information on the school and county spelling bees. The county bee was held at the school, with Robert Urich, Tanner Williams and Emily Wilford representing the Laredo school. It was reported that the Little Rascals fundraiser brought in $882. It was also noted that any student applying for the Murphy Scholarship should have their application turned into their high school counselor to be forwarded to the committee prior to the March board meeting at which time the committee will review them.
Following an executive session, the board accepted the resignation of Megan Curtis as third and fourth grade paraprofessional. Her last day was Jan. 15.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for March 14.
