A trip to Kansas City on Saturday resulted in two losses for the North Central Missouri College basketball teams as the Lady Pirates and Pirates both fell to Penn Valley Community College. The North Central women were on the wrong end of a defensive contest, falling 66-48, while the North Central men came up just short, losing 106-103 in overtime.
Lady Pirates
The North Central women jumped out to an 18-14 first quarter lead, but managed just five points in the second quarter as Penn Valley turned up the defensive pressure. Penn Valley would go on to outscore the Lady Pirates in both the third and fourth quarters, sending the Lady Pirates home with another region loss.
Madison Winters had 13 points and seven rebounds to lead the Lady Pirates while Camille Buttorff finished with 11 points and eight rebounds.
With the loss, the Lady Pirates fell to 5-17 on the season and 1-3 in Region 16 play.
Pirates
The NCMC men battled Penn Valley all game long to the point where 40 minutes was not enough to determine a winner. The two squads took the back-and-forth action into overtime, but the home team prevailed in the bonus period, topping the Pirates by a mere three points.
Demetrius Houston and Terrance Bush kept the Pirates in the game with Houston going for 39 points and six assists and Bush adding 35 points and 10 rebounds. D’Tavian Walker had a double-double for the Pirates as well, scoring 10 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
With the loss, NCMC fell to 9-12 overall and 1-2 in region play.
Both NCMC squads will get a brief intermission on region play, traveling to Ellsworth Community College for a women’s-men’s doubleheader tonight in Iowa Falls, IA. Action tips off with the women’s game at 5:30.
