The Grundy R-5 High School boys basketball team was eliminated from the Meadville Tournament on Wednesday night, falling to Linn County in the consolation semifinals.
Grundy jumped out to a 16-12 lead in the first quarter, but Linn County took charge in the second, going on a 22-7 run to close the half. Grundy would outscore Linn County in both the third and fourth quarters, but the damage done in the second frame was too much to overcome for the Panthers.
“The boys played their best game of the season,” Panthers’ Head Coach Les Jackson said. “We got within one point with two minutes left, but couldn’t quite get the lead back.”
Grundy (3-13) was paced by Brady Huffman, who had 16 points and nine rebounds. Grundy also got 13 points and six rebounds from Blake Foster, 11 points and five assists from Seth Riddle, 11 points from Ben Henry, eight rebounds from Bryson Gann and four assists from Alex Webb.

Tri-County Girls 48
The Tri-County girls just missed their first win of the season, falling to Union Star by just nine points in the consolation semifinals of the Gilman City Tournament.
Tri-County trailed 15-10 after the first quarter and 30-23 at halftime. The Lady Mustangs made a small run in the third quarter, but Union Star closed the game on a 12-8 run to seal the win and eliminate Tri-County from the tournament.
Jadan Almond had 12 points to pace the Lady Mustangs (0-14) and Seri Huff finished with seven.
North Harrison Boys 39
Tri-County Boys 30
The Tri-County boys were also eliminated from the Gilman City Tournament with a nine point loss, theirs coming at the hands of North Harrison.
The low-scoring contest saw the two squads combine for just 24 first-half points. Tri-County held a 16-8 lead at the break, but North Harrison dominated the second half, outscoring the Mustangs 31-14 to complete the comeback.
Tri-County (0-14) was led by Dakota Leach, who had nine points, and Fernando Bechtel, who had eight. Lance Cook finished with seven points.

Hale Girls 55
The Grundy R-5 girls advance to the semifinals of the Meadville Tournament on Tuesday night, picking up a first round win over Hale.
Hale established a two-point advantage in the opening frame and still held that edge at halftime. Grundy used a 17-13 run in the third quarter and a 17-11 run in the fourth to come from behind, however, and pick up the eight-point win.
Zoe Littleton’s 15 points, nine rebounds and four steals led the way for the Lady Panthers (10-5). Abby Wells added 12 points, eight assists and four steals and Matana Munday had 11 points and seven rebounds. Grundy also had nine points and four assists from Emily Milazzo and Morgan Axtell scored eight points. Mady Williams added five points for the Lady Panthers.
Grundy will face Mercer in the tournament semifinals in Meadville tonight at 4:30.

The Grundy R-5 boys were sent to the consolation side of the Meadville Tournament bracket on Tuesday night, suffering a lopsided loss to the tournament’s host school and top seed.
Grundy trailed 18-7 after the first quarter and 32-13 at halftime. The Panthers would continue to lose ground in the second half as Meadville cruised to the win.
Huffman led the Panthers with eight points and seven rebounds and Gann had seven rebounds. Riddle handed out three assists and Webb finished with six rebounds and three steals.
Gilman City Girls 69
Gallatin JV Girls 28
The Gilman City girls scored a big win on Tuesday night, defeating the Gallatin junior varsity at the Gilman City Tournament. The Lady Hawks led 19-9 after the first quarter and never looked back, outscoring Gallatin in all four quarters.
“Our defense was much better this game, no one got into foul trouble,” Lady Hawks’ Head Coach Adam Clark said. “We turned several steals into transition points. We also shared the ball well with 17 assists on the night. Another positive note was our perimeter shooting, which came alive. We hit seven three-pointers.”
Gilman (10-4) was paced by Saige Holmes, who had 21 points, four assists and two steals. Hailey Burrows added 17 points and two assists and Darriane Carey had 15 points, three steals and two assists. Megan Cottrell finished with nine points and two steals.
The win moved the Lady Hawks into the semifinals where they will take on Pattonsburg tonight at 4:30

Gallatin JV Boys 34
The Gilman City boys also soared past the Gallatin junior varsity in the Gilman City Tournament’s first round on Tuesday night. The Hawks took a slim 16-12 lead in the first quarter, but blew the game open with a 14-5 second quarter run and 15-5 third-quarter run. Gilman cruised in the fourth, taking the game by 21 points.
Cornelius Peery led Gilman (6-8) with 30 points and Shane Arnold scored 11.
The win places the Hawks in semifinal action tonight where they will play top-seeded Princeton at 5:45.
North Harrison Girls 48
Tri-County Girls 9
The Tri-County girls were dropped to the Gilman City Tournament consolation side of the bracket with a loss to top-seeded North Harrison in the opening round on Tuesday night. The Lady Mustangs managed just nine points in the contest as North Harrison controlled the game from the opening tip to the final buzzer.
The Lady Mustangs were led by Tanna Courter’s four points in the loss.
