The Trenton High School wrestling team was on the road on Tuesday night, falling to Chillicothe 53-20.
The teams traded pins in the first two matches as Jeffrey White was pinned at 152, but Wynne DeVorss answered for the Bulldogs with a win by fall at 160.
Wynne DeVorss completely controlled his opponent at 160 before eventually getting the pin,” Trenton Head Coach Charlie Bacon said. “It was good to see Wynne work a few takedowns before he put his opponent away.”
After that, however, Chillicothe went on a run, taking the next three matches. Lucas Clark was pinned at 170 and Jadan Whitney lost by a 3-1 decision at 195. Those two losses sandwiched the 182-pound weight class, where Trenton was open, yielding six more points.
“Jadan Whitney lost a really close match by a point to a really tough kid with much more experience than him,” Bacon said. “I was proud to see what Jadan was able to do with a much more experienced wrestler.”
Mason Owen turned things back in the Bulldogs’ favor at 220, where he picked up a 9-0 major decision victory. Cole Little was pinned at 285 and Trenton was open at 106. But at 113, Brenden Johnson scored an 11-2 major decision victory for Trenton.
“Brenden Johnson got a solid win for us at 113,” Bacon said. “He wrestled smart and stayed in good position throughout the match to get us a major decision. Mason Owen also had a great match at 220, winning a 9-0 decision over another good Chillicothe opponent. Mason controlled the match in every position. He got the first takedown and took charge of the match from that moment on.”
Chillicothe took the next four weights as Daniel Rodriguez (120) lost by a 9-5 decision, Tommy Johnston (126) lost by a 20-4 technical fall, Trenton was open at 132 and Eric Lovett (138) lost by fall.
The final match of the night saw Trenton strike one final time as Drew Rorebeck scored a win by fall over Nicholas Duncan at 145.
“Drew Rorebeck also had a great match at 145 with a first period pin over his opponent,” Bacon said. “The score might not indicate it, but we did wrestle better against Chillicothe than we have in past duals. I saw a lot of positive things even from our wrestlers who couldn’t come out with the victory. As a coach, I ask for 100 percent effort and improvement every match and that is what I saw.”
The dual loss moved Trenton to 4-9 on the season. The Bulldogs will get back on the mat on Thursday, traveling to Stanberry for a quadrangular match that also includes Rock Port and Hamilton. First matches are scheduled for 6 p.m.
