Trenton Wins Four B Pool Titles, 2nd In Two A Pools

Jan 25, 2016 | Sports & Recreation, Wrestling

The Trenton High School wrestling team was in action on Saturday at the Brookfield Tournament. Trenton came away with two runner-up finishes in A pool action and scored four titles in B pools.
Trenton was led by Brenden Johnson (113) and Wynne DeVorss (160), both of whom placed second in the A pool of their respective weight classes. Johnson got the job done with a 2-1 record and DeVorss went 3-2.
“I thought we had a very strong showing at the Brookfield Tournament,” Trenton Head Coach Charlie Bacon said. “Brenden Johnson got us started off right with a big win over a Marceline opponent who has beaten him twice already this season. Brenden looked better on his feet and didn’t make the mistakes he made earlier in the season. Brenden went on to place second in the A pool.
“Wynne DeVorss also placed second in the A pool. Wynne wrestled some tough competition, where he won three matches and lost two. He found himself in a three-way tie for second, but because Wynne is good on top and was able to pin his opponents, he came away with the silver. I am proud of Wynne because he is looking much more confident on his feet with his takedowns, which opens up more opportunities for him to be on top, which is his best position.”
Trenton captured four first place titles in B pools as Daniel Rodriguez won the 126-pound B pool, Eric Lovett won the 138-pound B pool, Jadan Whitney won the 195-pound B pool and Mason Owen won the 220-pound B pool. Rodriguez was 3-0, Lovett went 5-0, Whitney was 2-0 and Owen was 3-0.
“I am proud of the way that Eric wrestles because he never gives up,” Bacon said. “Regardless of the score of the match, Eric finds a way to come back and win either by points or by pin.
“I wished Jadan would have had more matches because he looked great. I think Jadan turned a corner on Saturday. Jadan got takedown after takedown against both of his opponents. I am very proud of his performance and the fact that he was having fun While doing it. Mason Owen continues to put together great matches at 220. He dominated each opponent.”
Trenton also had placewinners in Lucas Clark, who was second in the 170-pound B pool with a 4-1 record, and Cole Little was second in the 285-pound B pool with a 1-1 record. Other wrestlers in action for Trenton included Tommy Johnston (126), who was 1-2 in B pool action; Tyler Warner (132), who was 1-2 in B pool action; Nick Shields (145), who was 0-4 in B pool action; and Jeffrey White (152), who was 2-3 in B pool action.
“I think we looked better as a team overall,” Bacon said. “We were more confident and controlled more matches, which is what you like to see this time of year.”
Trenton’s wrestlers will be back in action on Tuesday night, traveling to Chillicothe to take on the Hornets in dual action. First matches are scheduled for 6 p.m.
