Dec 29, 2015 | Headline News

Two Sullivan County residents lost their lives in a two-vehicle accident on Monday, blamed on the icy roadways.
Larry G. McAtee, a 47-year-old resident of Milan, was reported dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred on Monday morning about six miles east of Milan on Highway 6. He was the driver of a truck that was eastbound when it went out of control on the ice-covered roadway and slid into the path of a westbound SUV, driven by 55-year-old Lesa VanVelzer of Green Castle. Ms. VanVelzer was taken to the Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, then transferred to the University Hospital in Columbia, where she was pronounced dead around 6:46 p.m.
Ms. VanVelzer was wearing a seat belt. McAtee was not. Both vehicles were demolished.
The accident was investigated by Trooper R. Lawrence and Sgt. G. Ward of the Missouri State Highway Patrol. They were assisted by the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office and Sullivan County Ambulance Department.
