The Grundy R-5 High School basketball teams saw action at North Central Missouri College’s Holiday Hoops Wednesday afternoon, taking on Nodaway-Holt in a girls’-boys’ doubleheader. Grundy took the girls’ contest 60-53, but fell 59-47 in the boys’ match-up.
Lady Panthers
Grundy used quick guard play and a dominating inside presence to outlast Nodaway-Holt in a game that was close throughout. The two squads were deadlocked at 11-11 after the opening quarter and the Lady Panthers trailed by just two points at halftime. The deficit grew to five entering the fourth quarter, but Grundy closed the contest with a 19-9 run in the fourth quarter to rally for the victory.
Matana Munday led Grundy with a double-double, grabbing 22 points and 15 rebounds. Roni Busick added 14 points and four assists and Emily Milazzo finished with 14 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Grundy also got four points, 13 rebounds, six assists and three steals from Abby Wells.
With the win the Grundy girls moved to 5-3 on the season.

Panthers
The Grundy boys found themselves behind in the first quarter, 14-10, but kept the game close and trailed by just five points at halftime. Nodaway-Holt began to get a little distance on the Panthers early in the third quarter, but Grundy roared back, closing the gap to just two points entering the final frame. That would be as close as Grundy would get, however, as Nodaway-Holt put the game away with a 20-10 run over the final eight minutes of the contest.
Bryson Gann had 13 points to lead Grundy and Brady Huffman added 12. The Panthers also got nine points and four assists from Ben Henry, six points and three steals from Seth Riddle and eight rebounds and five assists from Isaac Chamberlain.
With the loss, the Panthers fell to 3-5 on the season.
Both Grundy teams will be back on the court on Tuesday, Jan. 5, as they play host to Hale in Galt. Action tips off at 6 p.m. with the girls’ game and the boys’ contest will follow.
